Profile

I love to experiment with clay because it allows me to express my creativity in a tangible manner. The primary material of my work is porcelain. I fell in love for its pure fineness, translucency and strength, but still struggle to embrace its brittleness and lack of plasticity. However, this challenging nature yet somehow leads me to see the reality of surprises, failures, frustrations, excitements and enjoyments of life as a ceramic artist.

ARTIST STATEMENT
If art is a reflection of the creator, then my works are visual collages of influences from East and West. I am interested to create works where both cultures within a piece not only converse with one another through their tradition of material, form and craftsmanship, but also through their cultural context in which they originate from. I attempt to create an orchestra of East and West in my work and wish to present the unity, harmony, or sometimes tension of both cultures in a visual appeal.

My current work attempts to elaborate the local culture and craft traditions of Chinese pottery with a modernist and contemporary sense of design. Underlying my work is also a desire to reflect my curiosity in the cultural identity and phenomena that is of the hybrid nature in today’s globalised world. They often reflect emotional attachments that are inherited from family tradition, local convention and domestic ritual. Conforming them to these cultural references, it helps me to trace and define the roots of my own belonging. Moreover, my interest is to review our culture with my work and to put them into a new context in a creative way.
