During wood firing, the clay surfaces begin to become sticky and tacky to ash and alkalis at stoneware temperatures. These is called natural fly ash glazes that usually result in green color.  

The significance of the glaze effect is depended on the length of the firing (time to build up fly ash glaze), the atmospheres (oxidation or reduction), and the type of clays (stoneware or porcelain).
